Our Values
At Moss and Fern Studio, we are guided by a deep commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and anti-racism. Our values shape every aspect of our business, from the yarn we dye to the tools we curate, and the community we nurture.
Body and Fat Justice
We believe in crafting spaces that are welcoming and affirming for people of all sizes. Our anti-fat tax discount ensures that larger bodies are not financially penalized, offering 10% off when you purchase with the code FATTAX10. We encourage super fat and infinifat folks to use the discount on any quantity of yarn, since larger bodies need more yarn even for smaller projects like cowls and shawls. We ask that those who are small fat and mid fat evaluate where exactly they are impacted by the fat tax, and use the discount accordingly. Smaller fat bodies may not feel the tax on accessory items the way that larger fat bodies do, so as a jumping off point we encourage you to use this discount on sweater quantities only.
We exclusively highlight size-inclusive pattern designers in our advertising, and every product we curate is made with all bodies in mind. When we create in-house items, we offer them in multiple sizes, with one consistent price for all. We do not—and will not—upcharge for larger sizes.
Anti-Racism and Decolonization
We are dedicated to fostering an actively anti-racist business. This means continually educating ourselves, reflecting on how whiteness has shaped our world, and working to decolonize our business practices. As we grow, we will ensure that our workplace is a community-centered space rather than one rooted in harmful norms and capitalistic ideals. Through our social media platforms, we use our voice to amplify injustices and support underrepresented makers and designers of color. Additionally, we make recurring donations to Indigenous organizations in our area, committing to increase our contributions as our business expands.
Pro 2SLGBTQIA+ and Pro Trans Solidarity
At Moss and Fern Studio, we stand firmly with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Our commitment to inclusivity includes a clear and unwavering affirmation of trans people. We believe that trans women are women, trans men are men, and that people of all genders deserve respect, safety, and joy. Our space welcomes queer and trans makers without exception, and we work to cultivate an environment where people can show up as their full selves without fear of dismissal or debate.
Our support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is not a passive declaration; it is an active practice. We will challenge transphobia when we see it, refuse to platform exclusionary ideologies, and use our presence in the fiber arts community to help weave a safer and braver space for everyone. This includes using gender-inclusive language in our product descriptions and communication, supporting trans-led initiatives when possible, and continuing to educate ourselves on issues facing trans and gender-diverse communities.
Eco-Consciousness and Sustainability
Our business is rooted in respect for the earth. We prioritize selling products from brands that share our commitment to sustainable materials and practices. We actively avoid promoting fast fashion and other eco-unfriendly business models. In line with our values, we use compostable and eco-friendly packaging, and whenever possible, we reuse packaging materials to reduce waste. At Moss and Fern, we believe in slow fashion, valuing quality over quantity, and avoiding a culture of over-consumption.
Community and Inclusion
Our goal is to build a space that is inclusive, and protective of marginalized identities. We actively call out gatekeeping behavior and work to ensure that marginalized voices feel welcome and heard. Through community events, such as make-alongs and fundraisers for causes we care about, we hope to bring people together in celebration of creativity and activism. At Moss and Fern Studio, crafting is also about weaving community together, honoring our planet, and standing up for justice.
