Welcome to Moss and Fern Studio!

Moss and Fern Studio was created from a love of knitting and a deep connection to the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. What began as a way to dye my own yarn has evolved into a business that celebrates slow fashion, sustainability, and the art of handmade goods. Surrounded by the moss, ferns, and rain of the region, I hand-dye yarn and wool top, drawing inspiration from the landscapes around me—from the stormy Oregon coast to the vibrant flower farms of Sauvie Island.

Alongside our yarn offerings, my husband and I design knitting tools, and we curate fiber arts accessories and self-care products, such as teas and hand balms, to create a full experience for fiber artists. We focus on ethically sourced wool and eco-conscious practices, helping our customers create long-lasting, sustainable pieces that stand against the tide of fast fashion.

Inclusivity is at the heart of Moss and Fern Studio. As a fat, disabled maker, I’ve experienced the challenges of finding spaces that welcome all bodies, and I’m committed to creating a brand that is luxurious, accessible, and open to everyone. Whether online or in person, I love connecting with our community—whether you find me at local Portland yarn shops, fiber festivals, or on Instagram and Threads @moss.and.fern.studio.

Thank you for supporting small makers and for helping to build a sustainable, inclusive future through the fiber arts!

Meet the Team

All Moss and Fern Studio goods are created in a tiny home studio in Portland, Oregon. From opening the packages of the raw materials, all the way to packaging them up and shipping them off, we are involved in every step of the process.

    she/her

Kim is the dyer, spinner, and knitter of Moss and Fern! She has been a life-long lover of fiber crafts, and she is so excited to share her passion with all of you.

Her grandmother taught her to crochet and sew when she was seven, and she has been playing with yarn and fabric ever since. She always liked the way knit items looked, but as someone who crocheted, holding two needles felt so foreign and daunting. One day she saw a cowl on instagram that she just HAD to have. The problem was… it was a knitting pattern, not a finished cowl. So… she bought the pattern, and got to work, and she has been knitting ever since!

She started dyeing her own yarn as soon as she saw how expensive it was for a fat girl like her to buy a sweater quantity of good quality yarn. She had a tight budget, but lots of ambition, so she bought a pack of undyed yarn and stumbled her way through! Now she's here, and ready to share her passion with the world! Join her on this journey won’t you?

In her free time, Kim enjoys reading, baking, and playing board games with her husband and friends. She is a DnD Dungeon Master, and loves nothing more than nerding out!

  • Mr. Moss & Fern | Engineer
    he/him

When things need lifting, fixing, or building, Peter is the man for the job! While Peter has no personal connection to the fiber arts, he does have a deep passion for engineering and art. Everything he makes sits at the nexus of form and function. He is the ultimate tinkerer, and he has a collection of incredible maker skills up his sleeve!

From building out the Moss & Fern studio space, to designing, printing, and painting flawless fiber craft accessories, and even hauling pans full of water and yarn around our space to make sure they get clean, Peter helps in every aspect of the business. His skills, his brain, and his love keep us going. Truly Moss and Fern could not exist without his support and hard work.

In his free time, Peter enjoys playing board games, and designing board game accessories. (Check him out on instagram at @petroglyph_studios !) He spends his days as a certified CPDT-KA dog trainer, who takes dogs out into nature to have glorious off leash hikes!

  • We sure do! As a fat maker myself, I know how hard it can be to get the materials you need at an affordable price. As I continue to grow, I hope to increase this discount.

Use code FATTAX10 for 10% off of 5 or more skeins of yarn.

  • I do not take custom colorway orders at this time.

  • Not at this time. I am currently only selling online. But join my mailing list! I will let you know when I do in store events or fiber festivals!
